Clean Air
We are all thankful for heat in our homes, especially this time of year. But did you know that forced air can stir up dust and dirt?
Forced-air heating systems are common in Wisconsin. The key to keeping this blowing air clean is to be sure your filter is clean.
The job of your filter is to catch these dust and dirt particles before they blow through your system and into your house. If your filter is dirty, it can’t catch these particles, defeating the purpose of your filter.
Filters are easily checked and replaced. To check your filter simply pull it out and hold it up to a light. If light is still visible through the filter it is probably still useable. Check your filter at least once a month.
Oil treated fiberglass framed in cardboard is what makes up most filters. Most filters have an arrow on them indicating the direction of the airflow for easy installation. Otherwise, install so that the oiled side of the filter is the side that the air strikes first.
There are also cleanable dry-foam filters that can be vacuumed or washed but are not as common as the fiberglass. Do not attempt to wash the fiberglass framed in cardboard filters to try to save a buck or two. They are inexpensive and should just be replaced when needed.
Checking the air filter on your furnace is fast and easy and can help prevent dust and dirt from entering your system and home. Don’t delay—do it today!
